My clients save boxes “just in case.” Boxes might be 15 years old, from things they haven’t owned in 14 years and ARGH those boxes might have been in a clammy basement and oooooooooooooooooooooooo spiders and mice. But you never know when you’ll need the box (imagine the plaintive tone, please).

So take heart, cardboard cache keepers everywhere: Gentle Giant Moving Company relocation experts, Business Partners with my colleagues and I in our Washington State National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals chapter, give you permission to keep the boxes for espresso machines and OLED TVs. So compromise, let go of the rest.

“And how do I know this?”, you might ask. Gentle Giant hosted my colleagues and I for an enlightening master class in packing. The cardboard is the secret – double-walled, the cardboard de la cardboard. It also makes a HUGE difference if, as much as possible, you layer items matched-by-size-and-shape, and pack in consideration of their weights. Heaviest on bottom, of course. On a macro-level, layering the boxes in the truck, heaviest on bottom, most fragile/lightest on top also makes a significant difference to how secure things will be. Wrapping stuff in paper – our host Craig demonstrated the burrito technique with ease. I prefer rolling stuffed grape leaves, but I think I’d manage with the same finesse. And unnamed clients who stash away your cartons – this was written with fondness, I promise.
