Compassion won’t surrender

I’m routinely in the neighborhood of the Woodinville Seattle Goodwill donation center: today, Sunday 5/24/2020, months into the COVID19 crisis, people are willing to wait an hour to make donations. And I pass a hospital surrounded by art-poster quality and Sharpie-scribbled “Thank You Medical Personnel, First Responders” signs. I started writing “Compassion can’t be conquered.” But that’s not true. Fear and hatefulness are taught, and those ravage compassion. Compassion won’t surrender.
