Do I Need This? Kate Schermerhorn, an award-winning photographer and filmmaker, big-heartedly gave my NAPO Washington State Chapter an 11/1/2022 private screening of Do I Need This?, her documentary about her keeping instincts, intertwined with and reinforced by her time as a witness to her mother’s decline in dementia. This post is way so many many many months overdue, and it saddens me that I didn’t manage to post it in time for its April 22 Earth Day 2025 PBS Network screenings.
It’s a beautiful movie: a fond and proud glimpse at Ms. Schermerhorn’s family, a wry and unflinching look at Ms. Schermerhorn’s tendency to hold on to items regardless of the items’ practical or demonstrable intrinsic values. Ms. Schermerhorn’s curiosity led her farther: she also examines consumerism in general, hoarding challenges in particular, and the danger our planet is in because of stuff.
Showings would make fantastic events for tool libraries, makerspaces, recycling centers and more. I can’t recommend it enough.
