Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff, Ph.D.

Dr. Kristin Neff pioneered the study of the concepts she discusses in her book Self-Compassion. They are now well-known. I find her observations compelling. She teaches that self-compassion, the practice of being consciously, consistently kind to ourselves, is a critical element of self-care which extends into our relationships with strangers, coworkers, friends and family and which enhances our understanding of ourselves in community. And nonetheless I struggled to review this book.

And it comes down to style. Dr. Neff’s writing style is very intimate: she interweaves evidence-based data with extremely revealing details of her own life and I heard too much of a dissonance between “science” and “self.”

Kate Reeves, MA, LMFT, Therapy for Geeks, is one of my go-to therapists when I have a question about a client, a therapeutic concept, or when I just want to see someone with a terrific smile. She thinks Dr. Russ Harris, Act Mindfully and The Happiness Trap will be a better match for my sensibilities. I look forward to learning about him.
