Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission started as a soup kitchen in 1932, the years of the Great Depression. That seems appropriate for one of the favored charities of a friend of mine, Cyndie Dantzscher, Chef of Savoury Thymes Catering. By 1938, it was sheltering over 100 men a night.
